Undertone is the thing that ruins it
Nearly every "why does this look wrong" call comes down to undertone. Greys go blue, purple, or green depending on what is next to them. Whites are warm or cool and almost never neutral. New England light is not neutral either
North facing rooms get cool indirect light all day, which drags cool colors colder and can make a soft grey read as slab concrete. Sample boards, not chips, and not painted squares on the wall next to the existing color. Two coats on a board that can be moved around the room, held against the trim, the floor, and the furniture, and looked at morning and evening. Sheen gets decided at the same time, since the same color in flat and in satin are visibly different colors.
